Real IRA DUBLIN Charges

A Dublin man charged with firearms offences has been granted bail at the Special Criminal Court.

Paul Maye (aged 47), of Bride Road, Dublin 8, is charged with the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at his home on July 7, 2011.

The charges include the unlawful possession of a single barrel sawn-off shotgun, a Walther P1 9mm pistol and a semi-automatic pistol.

The accused was also charged with the unlawful possession of 90 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 8 shotgun rounds and 49 rounds of ammunition of various calibres.

Maye was arrested and brought before a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court last Saturday after a garda investigation in to the activities of dissident republicans.

His co-accused Sean Farrell (aged 26), of Kilfenora Road, Crumlin, is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation within the State namely Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA on July 7 last.

State solicitor Michael Donovan told the court that there would be no objection to bail, provided an independent surety of €10,000 was lodged and a comprehensive list of conditions were adhered to.

He said these would include the provisions that Maye observe a curfew between 11pm and 7am and sign on each day at Kevin Street garda station between 9am and 9pm.

Maye is also to surrender his passport and cannot apply for any new travel documentation or leave the Republic of Ireland.

He must agree not to contact any proposed prosecution witnesses in the case and is to ensure that a mobile phone number provided to gardaí is contactable at all times and be the sole number used by him.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Alison Lindsay and Judge William Hamill, remanded Maye in custody with consent to bail to appear in front of the non-jury court on July 27.

He said that the court would also grant an application for legal aid.
