A 37-year-old man has been shot in both legs after being ambushed by two men at Turf Lodge, west Belfast.

Man shot in west Belfast
The man was dragged through an alleyway and shot.

He was out walking in the Downfine Walk area, near the Trinity centre, when he was attacked on Friday shortly before 6.30pm.

He was approached by two men who dragged him through an alleyway before shooting him three times.
The victim was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds in each calf and also in his left thigh.

A police statement said: "His condition is not believed to be life threatening at this stage."

SDLP Upper Falls Councillor Tim Attwood has hit out at those behind the second shooting incident in west Belfast in two days.

On Thursday morning, a teenager was shot in his bed in nearby Ballymurphy.

The 16-year-old was shot twice in the leg by masked men who pushed their way into his home in the Whitecliff Parade area.

Two members of the gang held the victim's mother at gunpoint as they searched through rooms in the house looking for their target.

Mr Attwood said:"This evening I attended the scene in Turf Lodge where a young man had been brutally shot in the leg 3 times in a so called punishment attack.

"The cowardly men, wearing hoods, engaged in these attacks have no place in our community."

He added: "Everybody who believes in human rights and justice must condemn these attacks and give their unequivocal backing to the PSNI in their efforts to police our communities."

Newry Charge

The man was arrested after a number of searches and seizures in the Derrybeg and Main Avenue areas of the city on Thursday morning.
He is charged with the collection and distribution of information likely to be of use to terrorists and the possession of articles likely to be of use to terrorists.
He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates' Court on Saturday.
